21st century terrace house 2010 Islington Council housing design competition

Higgs Young Architects design for Islington Council housing design competition is a 21st century terrace house of two / three storey with principal window elevations facing west, east and south and street facing individual front doors and windows creating outside rooms. A 5.5m terrace frontage with dual aspect optimises thermal efficiency, cost, density, daylight, passive sunlight gains and Lifetime Homes space requirements. L shaped plans on the north elevations avoid single aspect and overlooking and create a lower scale mews. All houses have secure private gardens with south orientation allowing large rear windows

Roof mounted solar panels are organised on a ‘chessboard’ layout to avoid overshadowing.  Efficient heating, ventilation, heat recovery, insulation and sealed envelope reduce energy demand by 80% with the remaining 20% micro-generated from building integrated renewable technologies. Rainwater from roofs is stored for grey water recycling. Efficient taps and appliances minimise water consumption. Green roofs retain rain water runoff and create a natural habitat. Separated storage for waste products is provided recycling to reduce waste including composting for organic waste with methane extraction. Secure cycle storage is provided within house plots and recharging points for electric cars. All aspects of a lifetime home are provided within the design
