1995  Keele University

35 hectare Masterplan for Keele University
Business & science park, academic, student centre and housing

Gary Young obtained planning permission with Terry Farrell and Partners for a 35 hectare extension of Keele University incorporating new academic and residential buildings and a business park as part of the University development  plan to double the number of students on the campus to 10,000 by 2010.

The existing University is set in the  park land setting of the 250 hectare Keele Hall which includes Heritage Woodland. The new development is within a valley separated by woodland from the existing centre.  The Masterplan proposes new infrastructure links between the existing and new campus with  pedestrian and cycle paths and a new University boulevard   to create a single identity.

The layout of buildings and spaces are organised to achieve maximum benefit from microclimate and an EDAS funded study was carried out to reccomend appropriate ways of achieving low energy buildings.

Residential buildings for up to 1800 student  and 50 staff are planned in a mix of four storey blocks and low rise houses with gardens all orientated to benefit from passive solar gains.
