1987  Hammersmith Island

Community planning and masterplan with transport interchange,
Hammersmith Community Trust and London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham with Farrells

A community planning centre was created by Gary Young with Farrells by the refurbishment of the existing Emerald Centre on Hammersmith Broadway in 1987. The community planning centre was retained for approximately 15 years until a new facility was provided in King Street.

Gary Young with Hammersmith Community Trust designed the alternative masterplan for Hammersmith Island to create a Conservation Area on Hammersmith Broadway and integrate a ground level bus transport interchange on the Island. Supported by the community,  the logic of the alternative masterplan was approved at public inquiry in 1987 by the Planning Inspector, but rejected by the Secretary of State, resulting in the demolition of all buildings except the historic Bradmore House.
